About Us

The Brain Injury Association of Tasmania is a non-government, state-wide, not-for-profit organisation that has a range of members.

BIAT receives re-current funding from the Motor Accident Insurance Board's Injury and Prevention Foundation Charities Committee, and the Department of Health and Human Services (Disability Services). BIAT is a member of the national body for brain injury, Brain Injury Australia (BIA) - and while based in Hobart, BIAT aims to provide its services to all regions of Tasmania.

Our Mission

• Promote awareness and understanding of the impact of acquired brain injury (ABI) to families, communities, and service providers through training, education and resources

• Lobby to address systemic issues which impact on people living with ABI – both at state level and through membership for the national body, Brain Injury Australia (link).

Our Objectives

The Brain Injury Association of Tasmania wishes to move forward with a strong focus on the areas of advocacy and providing representation as a peak body, with an emphasis on representation and support of the ABI Sector. Our objectives for 2008/2009 are to:

 • Position the Brain Injury Association of Tasmania as an effective, relevant peak body in the eyes of government, industry service providers and the general public;

• Actively facilitate the ongoing development of a service system that is responsive to the needs of people with acquired brain injury;

• Play a key role in activities that contribute to a community that is more informed about acquired brain injury.

The Committee of Management

The Brain Injury Association of Tasmania is managed by an independent Committee of Management of seven members drawn from around the State who have been appointed for their mix of community and business skills, knowledge and experience specific to brain injury.
